Powerful Careers Education
The OECD Career Readiness project shines a light on the ways we can improve education, employment and life outcomes for all young people through more effective careers education.
BECOME is featured in the OECD's Examples of Effective Career Guidance, praised as an example of innovation in inquiry learning combined with technology.
BECOME is an effective way to open career conversations with students earlier in their school years, as recommended by the OECD's research.
BECOME has been invited to present twice at the OECD's Disrupted Futures conferences. You can watch both papers as videos below.

BECOME at Disrupted Futures 2023
What data tells us about students' narrow aspirations, and why this is a wake-up call for careers education.
This presentation analyses real aggregate data from students in Australia before and after they have completed the BECOME program and provides practical outcomes for school leaders and teachers of students from year 5 / age 11 and up.

We found that student aspirations were narrow - often even narrower than the international data analysed by the OECD. They are aiming for a short list of jobs that generally conform to traditional social, demographic and gender roles.
Schools report students taking a passive approach to their future, a finding backed up by research by Monash University.
But when students engage in the BECOME program early (from year 5 up), explore career ideas openly, often, and across the curriculum they become excited by a wider view of the world of work.
The data show a significant jump in student optimism, confidence and conviction that school is relevant to their future. This is what we present in our papers below, with the data and research under our findings.

BECOME at Disrupted Futures 2021
Dr. Jim Bright & BECOME Co-founder Liv Pennie share an innovative approach to careers education.
Key Findings:
- students had an increased sense of agency over their future
- students were more likely to take action
- their optimism and hope for the future increased.
The results and student impact data build a strong case for early delivery of careers education.

What people are saying
"BECOME is the most thoughtful and comprehensive program I have encountered for helping young people consider their future careers and lives. I wish all students could be a part of this work—not only for their future success, but also for focusing their commitment to learning right now."
